Winter is the coldest season of the year, and for dog owners it can be a time when we worry about our four-legged friends. It's important that dogs wear winter coats in order to stay warm during these icy months. There are many different types of coats available for dogs, which makes it hard to choose one without doing some research first.

Here are some things you should consider before making your final decision!

Make sure the coat is not too warm for your dog. If you put on a winter coat that's too heavy on your dog, it can actually have negative effects causing your dog to sweat underneath which could make them sick. It might be better to put two lighter coats on your dog instead.

Think about how much time you will spend outdoors with your dog during the winter months and consider what kind of activities you like to do together, and then choose a coat that is suitable for those kinds of things. For example, if you love going jogging in the snow with your pup, it's important that you get a coat that will keep your dog safe and warm when you do.

Measure your dog's length, neck circumference, and chest circumference before buying a winter coat because it needs to fit perfectly for safety reasons. If there is too much space between the collar of the jacket and your pup's body, he or she might be able to slip out of it.

Make sure the dog winter coat you choose is made from a safe material that won't irritate your dog's skin or make them sick, for example by causing allergies. Some coats are treated with chemicals to prevent fleas and ticks which can be extremely harmful to our pets if they come in contact with their skin. Always check the materials of the suit before buying one or ask a professional for more information.

Every product has a unique size chart which can be found in the description of each product. Make sure to measure your pet based on the size chart available for each product. By referring to the size chart shown, it will help ensure the perfect fit. 

Below is a guide to help you measure your dog. If you require assistance, please CONTACT US. We are happy to help!

  • To determine the proper size for your dog, measure your dog's neck, chest, and back with a soft tape measure following the instructions below.
  • If you don't have a soft tape measure handy, but you do have a printer, CLICK HERE! When all else fails, use a string or ribbon to wrap around the dog and then lay flat next to a rigid tape measure or ruler.
  • When measuring your dog, the pet must be standing in a normal position. Laying down or sitting will result in inaccurate measurements. 


1. Neck circumference is measured at the base of the neck where the collar sits. Pull the tape snug but not tight.

2. Back length is measured from the base of your pet's neck where the collar sits to the base of the tail. 

3. Chest girth is measured at the widest part of the pet's chest just behind the front legs. Measure around the entire chest.

*For clothing, accurate chest measurements are critical, especially in breeds who have a much deeper chest. Please go one size larger for dogs with very thick fur or if the chest measurements fall between sizes.

4. Paws are measured by standing your pet on a sheet of paper and tracing all four paws including fur and nails. Measure the width and length of the largest paw print to determine your dog's shoe size. Alternatively, some shoes will have a printable size chart.
